The true catalyst for Father's Day came from Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother's Day and motivated by the deep respect she had for her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent of six children, Dodd proposed the idea of a day to honor fathers. She lobbied for the celebration, and in 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father's Day on June 19th.
Father's Day Gaining Popularity - 1972
Despite initial resistance and the perception that it was merely a commercial gimmick, Father's Day gradually gained popularity. Various presidents supported the idea over the years. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson sent a telegraph to Spokane praising the observance. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924.
